Joe Lovano Plays Coltrane “Ballads”

LovanoI am thrilled to announced that another performance of my Coltrane Ballads Project has been scheduled!

On May 19th 2013, the Metropole Orkest will be presenting a concert in Amsterdam, celebrating the 50th anniversary of “Ballads”. The performance will feature renowned tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano. The orchestra will be conducted by composer Daniel Jamieson, and they will be premiering his reimagined arrangements of these classic standards. In addition to the “Ballads” program, they will be performing arrangements by Jim McNeely, Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner and Billy Strayhorn.

Since the late 1980s, Joe Lovano has been consistently ranked as one of the world’s premiere tenor saxophonists, earning a Grammy Award and several mentions on Down Beat magazine’s critics’ and readers’ polls. As a leader, he has recorded and released over twenty-five albums, including “Quartets: Live at the Village Vanguard”, which garnered a Down Beat “Jazz Album of the Year” award.

Daniel Jamieson is a New York based composer whose writing spans a variety of styles, including jazz, pop, and musical theater. Daniel’s acclaimed 2011 debut release, “Sudden Appearance”, places him at the forefront of the current crop of young big band leaders.

Coltrane “Ballads” Project Announcement!

2013 will mark the 50th anniversary of the John Coltrane “Ballads” CD. To celebrate, I will be arranging all the music from the CD for jazz philharmonic orchestra (symphony + big band). I will be conducting a performance of this music in Toronto with a hybrid orchestra made up of members of my Danjam Orchestra and members of Victor Cheng’s Sneak Peak Orchestra. This concert will feature internationally acclaimed saxophonist Mike Ruby playing the role of the great John Coltrane.
